MY FAMICASE EXHIBITION 2023

Role: Creative Direction, Art Direction, Ideation, Illustration, Designer, 3D Modeling
Exhibitions: Meteor Club - Suginami City, Tokyo, JP & Capsule Corner - Los Angeles, CA, US

Started in 2005, by Meteor, a gallery and shop in Tokyo, Japan, My Famicase Exhibition is an annual art show of fan-made Nintendo Famicom cartridge designs with submissions from all over the world!

I’m a gamer and I’ve always had on my bucket list to create a video game.
While I didn’t create a full fledged playable game, I was able to enter the My Famicase Exhibition for 2023.
Along with 251 other artists and designers from all around the globe, I created an original concept for a game.

The game that I conceptualized is titled “SLEPT”

I wanted to created a feeling of unease by illustrating an eye that is suddenly awakened due to a terrifying nightmare.
While the eye itself is disturbing, I thought it could be cool to illustrate multiple eyelashes surrounding the eye.

During the creative process, I had three color options for the famicom cartridge: Black, Red and Yellow.
Ultimately, I landed on yellow because the of it’s sourness. I really wanted to add to the feeling unease that you get when looking at the graphic.

Once I narrowed down the thumbnails to one sketch and one hand drawn typeface, I decided to ink them in Procreate.
For the logo, I created a hand drawn script. To keep the design heavily graphic, I added the title in Japanese.

Initially, I had Slept written in kanji but changed it to katakana to phonetically keep it as close as possible to it’s English pronunciation.
Within the design there are small details that I had fun creating. The copyright copy has an eye in 2023 and “illenniums inc.” has the ‘c’ and period connecting.

Once the artwork was submitted into the exhibition, I decided to continue my learning of Blender by challenging myself to model a famicon cartridge to showcase my work.
I wanted to explore texture, color and lighting and UV mapping. With this, I was able to create an old worn effect on the sticker of the keyart.
Below I have a few process images in Blender and ultimately how the model was brought to life.

Meteor dropped a lookbook of all 252 pieces within the exhibition.

In April 2023, the exhibition kicked off at Meteor in Japan. The show moved on to Capsule in Los Angeles in August 2023.
Check out everyone’s amazing work and how mine fit in!
